Flight Attendant’s Jet Lag Playbook For Europe: 5 Things That Actually Work
By Jess Stanford, Former Flight Attendant
Jet lag in Europe hits different.
If you’re flying from Australia or New Zealand, you’re usually dealing with a brutal time-zone swing (often around 8–11 hours depending on where you land).
Coming from the US, it’s still a big shift — and the direction matters because flying east is what really cooks most people.
So what separates the travellers who land in Europe feeling foggy, cranky and useless for the first 24–48 hours… from the ones who hit the ground running and enjoy their trip from day one?
It’s not luck. It’s a few simple habits that make jet lag way more predictable — and a lot easier to beat.
Here are five strategies I used in my days as a flight attendant to reduce jet lag in Europe.

1. Start Living On Destination Time Before You Board
This is the fastest mindset shift you can make. As soon as you’re at the airport, start thinking in “Europe time.”
If it’s evening in London or Paris, treat it like evening — even if your body thinks it’s morning. Try to time meals and sleep around where you’re going, not where you came from.
You don’t have to be perfect. You just need to nudge your body in the right direction early.

2. Use Caffeine Like A Tool (Not A Comfort Blanket)
A lot of travellers drink coffee based on boredom, not strategy. On a Europe flight, caffeine can either help you land awake… or ruin your first proper sleep window.
A simple rule: avoid caffeine 6–8 hours before you plan to sleep. And once you land in Europe, use it to anchor the morning — not to survive the afternoon slump.
If you hit caffeine at the wrong time, you’ll end up wide awake at 2am staring at the ceiling in your hotel room in Rome.

3. Get Daylight On Your Face As Soon As You Land
Light is your body clock’s reset button. When you land in Europe, get outside as soon as you can — even if you feel gross.
A 15–20 minute walk in daylight does more for your internal clock than another nap in a dark hotel room.
If you arrive later in the day, sunset light is still powerful. It tells your brain: this is the new evening. The more daylight you get early, the faster you adjust.

4. Move, But Don’t Smash Yourself
Long flights into Europe make your body feel heavy and sluggish. A light walk, stretching and fresh air reduce that groggy “jet lag sludge” feeling faster than collapsing in bed immediately.
Save the gym session for day two. And if your first day is a big sightseeing day, the goal is “gentle movement,” not punishing yourself.

5. Protect Sleep On The Plane (This Is The Big One)
Here’s the part most people miss. They think they slept on the plane… but their head was falling forward, snapping sideways, or bouncing off the seat.
That kind of sleep is broken sleep. It’s full of micro-wakeups, and it doesn’t restore you. The goal isn’t “some sleep.” It’s supported sleep.
And that comes down to one thing: keeping your head and neck stable so your body can actually drop into deeper rest — especially on those overnight Europe flights where you really need to arrive functioning.
The Travel Pillow I Use On Long-Haul Flights
After years of trial and error, I now travel with the Snug Travel Pillow from Simplify Living.
It’s ergonomic and structured, so it actually supports your neck and stops your head from bobbing forward. Unlike flimsy inflatable pillows, it keeps everything aligned so you can fall into deeper sleep without constant interruptions.
It’s compact enough for carry-on, has a soft washable cover, and is designed specifically for long flights.
If I can get even 3–4 hours of proper, supported sleep on a long-haul flight, I land clearer, adjust faster, and don’t waste my first day feeling foggy.
At the time of writing, it’s available with 40% off, free shipping, a 2-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Simplify Living is also running monthly Euro Summer giveaways where you can win prizes like $15,000 or flights to Europe.
If you’ve got a long trip coming up, protecting your sleep might be the simplest change you can make.
